What is Miles & More?

Miles & More is a loyalty program of which several Star Alliance partner airlines are members, along with several other airlines. The program was created in 1993 by Lufthansa, with later integration by Star Alliance carriers, as well as Air Astana and Air Malta. Miles & More is currently the most extensive passenger rewards program in Europe, with over 25 million members across the continent.

The following airlines are members of the program:

Earning Miles 

Miles in the Miles & More program are divided into 3 distinct types: award miles, status miles, and HON Circle miles.

Award Miles: Award miles are the first types of miles available in Lufthansa’s program. These miles are used to redeem for reward flights. These miles expire after 36 months

Status Miles: Status miles are used to determine the frequent flyer status of members. Status mile is counted towards the calendar year in which they are earned and are also counted as an award mile. The two tiers which status tier miles are applicable for are Frequent Traveler or Senator tiers.

HON Circle Miles: Use HON Circle miles to meet the criteria to reach HON Circle membership – the pinnacle of Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program. Lufthansa counts these miles over two consecutive years.

Earning Miles with Flights

The easiest way to earn miles is by booking flights either with Lufthansa or with another program or  Star Alliance carrier.

Earn Miles with Hotel Partners

Earn miles when booking hotels through select Lufthansa, or Star Alliance hotel partners. Partners include Best Western, Marriot Bonvoy, H-Hotels, Kempinski, and more.

Other Ways to Earn Miles

Earn miles when making bookings through select rental car partners, including Enterprise, Budget, and more; when booking vacations or cruises with Enaviga or A Small World; or when shopping with select Lufthansa, or Star Alliance retail partners worldwide.

Redeeming  Miles

Redeeming Miles for Travel

The most popular way to redeem miles is through booking flights either with Lufthansa or another Star Alliance member. Miles & More miles are great for booking award flights with United Airlines, offering great savings – even in comparison with the United Mileage Club plan.  Miles are applicable either for a full flight or as partial payment, through the Cash & Miles program.

Redeeming Miles for Hotels or Rental Cars

Use miles to book hotels with hotel partners, with as few as 8,250 miles required to give the gift of a Radisson gift card. Miles can also be sued for hotel or rental car bookings with Hotels & Cars by Points.

Other Ways to Redeem Miles

Miles are also redeemable for gift cards or shopping experiences such as with Bicester Village, Fidenza Village, Ingolstadt Village, Kildare Village, or more. For more information, visit the program’s experiences page.

Status Tiers

Miles & More offers 4 tiers of membership. The first tier is basic membership, which offers the opportunity to earn the 3 types of miles: award miles, status miles, and HON Circle miles.

The following tiers are considered Elite status by Miles & More. Once a member reaches these Elite tiers, their benefits begin immediately and are valid for the next 2 years.

Frequent Traveler

The frequent traveler is the first tier of membership to offer perks and is the lowest level of Elite status.

Achieving Frequent Traveler Status

Frequent Traveler status requires collecting either 30 flights in one calendar year, or by earning 25,000 status miles – again in one calendar year.

Senator

Senator is the next level of status in the program and the highest level reachable through the accumulation of status miles.

Reaching Senator status is requires 100,000 status miles in a calendar year.

Achieving Senator tier receives the benefits available in the Frequent Traveler tier, as well as the following perks:

HON Circle

Achieving HON Circle is the top tier of the program and offers the very best perks and benefits in the program. This status requires the accumulation of HON Circle miles.

Achieving HON Circle Status

HON Circle status is the most difficult tier of membership to achieve, as it requires a member to earn 600,000 HON Circle miles over 2 calendar years. Earn miles only through business or first-class travel with partner carriers Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Luxair, and SWISS, as well as these airlines subsidiaries.
